Final Feature Work Completed: Road Modules and Create 2D Markings

The final few pieces of development work have now been completed for Road Constructor, including two major new features: Road Modules and the Create 2D Markings Editor. These additions expand what users can create, customise, and place alongside their road networks.

Final Feature Work Completed: Road Modules and Create 2D Markings

The final few pieces of development work have now been completed as Road Constructor moves closer to its Release Candidate 1.0 milestone, and two amazing new features have been added: Road Modules and the Create 2D Markings Editor.

These additions are designed to give users even more control, flexibility, and creative freedom when building road networks inside Unreal Engine.

Road Modules

Road Modules can be easily snapped to the side of existing roads and can follow the road contours automatically. This opens up a huge range of possibilities for road-side detail, environment dressing, gameplay objects, and modular world-building.

Modules can be used for almost anything, from simple static mesh placement such as fences, barriers, hedges, walls, lamps, railings, and edge strips, through to Blueprint Actors such as buildings, interactive objects, custom systems, and other project-specific content.

This makes it much easier to build detailed road-side environments while keeping objects aligned to the road shape and layout.

Create 2D Markings Editor

The new Create 2D Markings Editor gives users four flexible ways to create and apply custom road markings, making the system easy to use while also remaining powerful and robust.

Users can now create editable road markings manually with points and splines, use presets, import SVG files, or bring in a simple PNG image and draw over it. For an even faster workflow, PNG images can also be traced so Road Constructor can help generate the shape automatically.

A new Repeat Along Path workflow has also been added, allowing markings to be repeated along a custom path with spacing and variation controls. Special thanks to Alastair for the suggestion that helped inspire this feature.

These tools make it much easier to create custom symbols, road text, arrows, layout markings, repeated patterns, and other 2D road details directly inside the Road Constructor workflow.

Recent Changes and Feature Highlights

Here are some of the recent changes and features added during this final development stage:

RoadProps multi-asset support

Static Mesh, Skeletal Mesh, Blueprint Actor/Class, and Material support can now be handled in one Assets array.

Module RoadStyles

One-lane module styles can now be used for props, fences, barriers, hedges, walls, lamps, railings, edge strips, and more.

Module edge follow

Modules can follow a road’s true left or right outer edge, making placement cleaner and more accurate across different road shapes.

Module Quick Edit

Snap, Refresh, Detach, Set Offsets, Toggle Side, and Reverse controls have been added for faster editing.

Live Module offsets

Offsets, trims, spacing, and direction can be adjusted live, making it easier to fine-tune placement without slowing down the workflow.

RoadStyle width metres

UI Lane width now shows editable metre values alongside centimetre units for a clearer and more user-friendly setup.

Create 2D Markings

Custom editable road markings can now be created using points, splines, presets, and road anchors.

SVG / PNG import

SVG files can be imported, and PNG images can be traced into editable marking shapes.

Repeat Along Path

Markings can be repeated along a custom spline with spacing and random variation controls.

Guide image overlay PNG guide images can be loaded into the editor with offset, scale, and rotation controls, making it easier to draw or trace custom markings accurately.

These final feature additions represent an important step forward for Road Constructor. The focus now is on final testing, polish, documentation, video tutorials, and preparation for the upcoming Fab release.

Road Constructor continues to grow into a powerful and flexible road creation tool for Unreal Engine, giving users the ability to build roads, junctions, markings, roadside modules, and detailed road networks with greater speed, accuracy, and creative control.
