Default tool setup

Settings Tab

The Settings tab controls the default choices used when Road Constructor creates new content. It does not need to be changed constantly. Instead, treat it as the place to set up your preferred starting shapes, marking styles, material defaults, and build options before you create a batch of roads or related content. Set the default shapes, marking styles, materials, build junctions, build props, ground material, area material, marking material, and editor debug helper options used by new content.

Back to Documentation

Opening and Using the Settings Tab

  1. Open Road Constructor in the normal mode panel.
  2. LMB-click the Settings icon in the main tab grid.
  3. Open the Build, Ground, Areas, Marking, or Debug sections as needed.
  4. Set the defaults you want future creations to inherit.
  5. Return to Create, Ground, Areas, Markings, or another workflow tab to create new content using those defaults.

Build Defaults

The Build section contains the main defaults used when new roads and related road content are created. These choices help keep newly authored road content consistent across a project.

Choosing Shape and Style Assets

Several Settings rows use asset selectors. These allow you to choose default lane shapes, median shapes, sidewalk shapes, and marking styles. The chosen asset becomes the default seed for future generated content of that type.

  1. LMB-click the asset dropdown to choose an available asset.
  2. Use the circular refresh icon when you need the picker or displayed reference to refresh.
  3. Use the browse or magnifying glass style icon to locate or inspect the referenced asset in the Content Browser when needed.
  4. After changing defaults, create new content from the relevant tab to inherit the new selection.

Ground Defaults

The Ground section sets the default material used by Ground-tab creation workflows. This material is reused when you create new Free Draw or Polyline ground shapes unless that workflow or selected object overrides it later.

  1. Open the Ground section in Settings.
  2. Set Default Ground Material to the material you want new ground shapes to begin with.
  3. Move to the Ground tab and create Road Anchored, Free Draw, or Polyline ground content as needed.

Areas Defaults

The Areas section sets the default material for newly created Areas. Areas are separate standalone Road Constructor surfaces, and they can still be taken forward into their own material, preset, and PCG workflows afterwards.

  1. Open the Areas section in Settings.
  2. Set Default Areas Material to the material you want new Areas to use as their starting material.
  3. Move to the Areas tab, select an Area edge, create the Area, and adjust it further if required.

Marking Defaults

The Marking section sets the default core marking asset used when new authored markings are created. This is useful when you want lane, point, or curve markings to begin from a consistent project style.

  1. Open the Marking section in Settings.
  2. Set Default Core Marking to the marking asset you want new authored markings to start with.
  3. Move to the Markings tab and create lane, point, or curve marking content using the selected default as the starting point.

Debug Options

The Debug section is for editor-facing helper displays. Debug settings should normally stay disabled during everyday road creation and polish work unless you are deliberately investigating a specific tool behaviour.
